Style & Technique
The Prosopon School's iconographic technique is rooted in the 15th century Russian school. We use wood panels gessoed with a natural ground and gild with genuine gold leaf on bole, paint in egg tempera using natural pigments, and seal our icons with a traditional linseed oil finish. Our compositions are original, with forms and colors following Orthodox Church canons, and based on Russian and Byzantine types.
As laborers in a living tradition of sacred art, we seek to remain true to the spirit and form of the iconographic tradition to which Russia and Byzantium gave birth. We hope that the fullness of the New Testament revelation which belongs to Holy Icons is in some part present in those which our hands produce as well.
